I killed myself laughing while Tim scrambled for his trousers and ran after him.

All made up and all explained to Mr and Mrs Hunt (Tim’s dad had just handed his wife a ten-pound note, but he snatched it back when I clarified things for them), I said it was time I left.

‘I’ll drive you,’ Tim said, still red in the face.

‘Drive me? In what?’ He gave me a lift home on one of his dad’s tractors once. It took nearly an hour, and we almost lost it in a dyke. Mind you, we were only eleven at the time. (Serious telling off for both of us.)

‘My Christmas present,’ he said. ‘The farm’s had a good year.’

Outside, a shiny new Ford Something was parked beside the other farm vehicles.

‘Nice car,’ I said, and it was. The farm must have had a great year.

‘Yeah,’ Tim agreed. ‘Shame it’s not mine.’

He pointed to one of the old trucks. A Nissan flatbed that stank of manure and was covered in dubious-looking side-effects of sheep farming.

‘That’s okay too,’ I enthused. ‘You’ve got your own wheels.’

‘Needs cleaning, best-mate Dex,’ he hinted.

‘And there you’ve lost your audience,’ I said. ‘Give me a lift then.’

It was cool. Tim had a vehicle, he would have more independence, and he would have something to be responsible for. He’d also be able to give me a lift to school and back, but that was a purely selfish thought.

And so is this. My best friend is back, I’ve got some good mates at school, and some excellent teachers behind me (metaphorically), and I’ve got Christmas with Morgan. I’ll be with him in five days. My life couldn’t be any better. As one song says, “I’m on the top of the world,” and as another one doesn’t say, “You’ll never wank alone.” Forget it. Tired.
